July 24, 2009
The protest took place in Jokai Ter on July 24, 2009 and lasted roughly an hour, between 8-9PM. In my estimation between 700 and 1000 people came to participate or document the event. Organizers wore yellow reflective vests and carried cell phones. Several officers and police vehicles were in the square, but showed little presence. Around 8:30 a man spoke into a megaphone and then handed it off to another man. His comments were loosely translated and summarized as “This area is filled with many artistic young people, laws like this will drive them out.” Around 9PM everyone raised a glass of whatever they had and sarcastically toasted the new law. The purpose of the event was to protest a new law made by city government that says all bars in District VI must close at 10pm due to noise complaints from some residents. Obviously, if every bar in a neighborhood closed at 10pm, it would mean a bunch of lost jobs and revenue, both directly and indirectly.
